A Studio Shed - Your New Office?

This past year saw several significant changes in the lives of virtually every Canadian. One of these changes was the need to work from home, particularly in the first half of the year. Nearly 5 million workers had begun to work remotely by the end of March. With businesses shutting their doors and offices unable to accommodate their workers, employees across the country started turning studies and spare bedrooms into makeshift offices.

While this may have worked for some, for many others it has been a less-than-ideal situation. Children studying at home and demanding attention, pets making noise, and other distractions combine to create an environment poorly suited to focusing on work.

Additionally, some new home workers spend their day in their pyjamas, snacking, and taking multiple breaks. Often, the act of getting up, getting dressed, and heading into the office helps to cultivate the mindset necessary for productivity, but that’s harder to achieve when you are simply walking from one bedroom to the next.

Imagine, then, if you had a proper office, separate from the rest of the house and free from distractions. The growing trend of using a backyard shed is accomplishing just that. Here are some reasons why a backyard studio shed makes sense.

• They Keep Your Home and Work Lives Separate. One of the advantages of working from home is the ability to be present when your family needs you. Unfortunately, family members often fail to understand that working at home is still working. They may feel free to interrupt you for inconsequential matters that don’t require your involvement. As a result, your work time may be very inefficient.

On the other hand, it’s also possible for you to feel like you are always working if you work and live in the same space. You will never be able to leave the office if the office is your home.

Having your office in a separate building, even if it’s only across the lawn, gives you the space you need to not only get away from your distractions, but also to leave work behind when you are done for the day.

• They Provide Personal Space if Your Home is Cramped. While some may be able to turn a spare bedroom into an office, others end up working at the kitchen table due to not having enough space in their home. No spare bedroom likely means no dedicated office. Having a studio shed gives you the space you need to get things done.

• More Natural Light and Fresh Air. Your backyard studio shed can be customized to give you more natural light and better airflow. In warm weather, you might even be able to open it up to give yourself an open-air workspace so that you can work “outside” while still having everything you need for your office.

• Privacy and Security. If you have kids—or sometimes even curious pets—your workspace may not remain inviolable. Little hands or paws may end up touching things that need to remain carefully organized or documents and tools may go missing. Having an office that is strictly for business use means that things will remain the way you leave them, secure in your private space.

These are just a handful of ways that a backyard studio shed can make your time working at home easier and more efficient. Contact us today to learn more about how to become more productive working at home in your own studio shed.
